When You FAST

Fasting is not for the strong but it’s for the weak, the common, the frail, and the ordinary people who realize that they need God in their lives!

Many Christians have been living a life of defeat and lack for so long, many have burned out and back-slided because of the expectations that turned into nightmares of frustrations. Do you want an insurance where the premium has already been paid and the benefits would last for the rest of your life? It comes from knowing that God will fight for you and your family and that His favor is available for you – TODAY! This is the time and this is the season. All these frustrations will come to an end. We say “no more”; we need the favor of God for 2014, 2015, 2016………….Favor is available for you everyday, every month and every year of your life! BUT HOW?

THE 3 GOLDEN KEYS: (Matthew 6:2, 5 and 16 NIV)

2 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men.

5 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men.

16 "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting.

  • GIVING: it is honoring God. Honoring God is the basis of both praying and fasting; if you don’t understand honoring, you cant honor God;
  • PRAYER: it is communication with God. Every relationship is based on communication, remove communication and you remove relationship. If you talk to God, God will talk to you; if you don’t, He won’t; the decision to pray or not to pray lies solely on us – it’s our choice. But the body or the flesh always battles with what the Holy Spirit desires for us that’s why we need to discipline it. But most of the time the resistance of the flesh is strong, and deeper measures has to be taken – that’s why we need to beat our bodies (a term used in wrestling which means to pin down or put into submission) so the opposition would stop!

 1 Corinthians 9:27

“No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize”. NIV

“But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified”. NKJV

  • FASTING is going without food: abstention from food, or some types of food, especially as an act of religious observance it’s from the Hebrew word tsuwm (tsoom);a primitive root that means to cover over (the mouth), i.e. to fast: To cover your mouth and refuse to eat; to go without food. FASTING, is presenting our bodies in sacrifice. FASTING IS WORSHIP.

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual act of worship.” (Romans 12:1 NIV)

We can only offer our bodies as living sacrifices when we go without food.By not watching TV or opening the computer does not constitute fasting, but it is part of Gods requirement.

“3 'Why have we fasted,' they say, 'and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed? "Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please…” (Isaiah 58:3 NIV)

To humble ourselves before God. (The marks of a true disciple); when seeking Gods presence; to receive revelation from God; and when seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit. It’s not easy to fast, it’s not fun to fast; but it is powerful! It takes a lot of sacrifice to fast. In our culture of entertainment, gratification and pleasure, it is almost impossible to hear the word “sacrifice”, this is the generation of hand me what I want, now! Fasting is not for the strong but it’s for the weak, the common, the frail, and the ordinary people who realize that they need God in their lives!

There is something we need to understand, FASTING WILL NEVER MANIPULATE GOD. You don’t twist the arm of God when you go into a fast. By fasting, you don’t mean you demand God to do something for you and to do it quick and fast because you are fasting. You don’t go into a fast thinking that you will earn Gods blessings or miracles. Fasting cannot manipulate the Hand of God.

But instead, fasting gets you ready for Gods answers, it prepares your heart to say “not my will but your will be done Lord!” Fasting breaks you down. It brings you to a place of total humility, brokenness and obedience. What you earn is the favor of God because you relinquish your life for Him. A surrendered life releases His grace upon you and it is His grace that releases the blessings.

“21 His servants asked him, "Why are you acting this way? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept, but now that the child is dead, you get up and eat!" 22 He answered, "While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, 'Who knows? The Lord may be gracious to me and let the child live.' 23 But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me." (2 Samuel 12:21-23 NIV)

Fasting sharpens your spiritual perception. Jesus said “Watch and pray”. Watch means to be alert, to perceive, to sense; He didn’t say pray and watch but watch and pray. That means what you pray for is what you see and perceive in your spirit – that’s prophetic prayer. Fasting is the way to work with God and not for God – working for God means you do things in your own ability, working with God means you let God be God in you and through you!

When you fast, your perception becomes clear, sharp and faster. Some think that fasting got them promoted or solve the problem – NO, it’s because you are perceiving something in your spirit and you are praying the right prayer because you have become sharp. When you perceive right and pray right, God moves. Remember that fasting doesn’t change God, it changes you.

FASTING IS GODS GRACE. Remember that it is by the grace of God that we can come to Him and be ever closer to Him. By fasting we increase our receptivity to His voice and His will in our lives. Fasting is a spiritual discipline that is a physical act that means it entails discipline in our bodies as well. There is a mysterious connection between the Holy Spirit and fasting, it cannot be explained. FASTING IS AN INVITATION– IT IS NOT A REQUIREMENT, IT IS THE RESPONSE OF A HEART THAT HUNGERS MORE FOR GOD THAN THE FOR THE THINGS OF THIS WORLD. IT IS VOLUNTARY.

There is nothing wrong when we ask God for something while we are fasting, but we don’t demand from Him. But when we fast, we are getting ready for Gods answer; we are getting ready to do what God wants us to do; to give up what He wants us to give up; to obey our Master for His bidding upon us. By fasting we can overcome and even have complete victory.

“18For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.” (Philippians 3:18-19 NIV)

“You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.” (James 4:4 NIV)

The Bible says that any Christian who does not crucify the flesh is an enemy of the cross. Any Christian who is friendly with the world is an enemy of God. Fasting makes you die to the flesh and the things of this world; instead it produces in us greater intimacy with God.

Fasting tells the flesh to shut up because he is not your master; Jesus is our Master!
